Have you ever been asked to guess how many jellybeans are in a container and the person with the closest guess wins a prize?
Well, this hands on activity deals with proportions and volume to approximate how many Starbursts are in a larger container. Students must use the volume formula for a cylinder, rectangle, cone, and half a sphere. They will then have to create a proportion of the volume of the original container over the number of Starbursts equal to the new container's volume over the number of x Starbursts and solve for x.
Materials needed to perform this activity include:
- string
- ruler
- scissors
- calculator
- starbursts
- measuring cup
